Taraweeh
For Urdu/Hindi Users:
What is Taraweeh?
Tarawih is the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger(Peace Be Upon Him). There are many narrations on praying in the nights of Ramadan.
Narrated Abu Huraira:
I heard Allah’s Messenger (Peace Be Upon Him) saying regarding Ramadan, “Whoever prayed at night in it (the month of Ramadan) out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Book 32, Hadith 226)
Tarawih is derived from the Arabic word “Taweeha” which means to rest. Taraweeh Prayer consists of 20 Rakat which are performed in 2,2 rakats and between each four Rakat the worshippers have some rest. In 20 Rakats of Tarawih, we take rest 5 times after every 4 Rakats that’s why this prayer is called the plural of Tarweeh “Tarawih”.
Tarawih is Sunnat e Muakkadah, It means that if someone skips it some time then it is permissible but if someone skips it every time then he/she will be Transgressor.
On the nights of Ramadan praying 20 Rakats, Namaz e Taraweeh is Sunnat e Muakkadah for every Muslim man and woman and whoever skips it every time will be Transgressor.
Completing Quran Kareem in Taraweeh Prayer is also Sunnat e Muakkadah while the congregation of Taraweeh is Sunnat e Muakkadah Al Kifaya, It means that no one performs Taraweeh Prayer with congregation then all will be Transgressor, And if some perform Tarawih with congregation then no one will be Transgressor.
What is the time of Tarawih
The time of Taraweeh Prayer is after Isha. It means that whoever hasn’t prayed Isha cannot start Tarawih. It is mandatory to pray Isha before praying Tarawih.
Rakats in Taraweeh
How many Rakats are there in Taraweeh? Some people says that the Rakats of Taraweeh are 8 rather than 20. The 20 Rakats of Taraweeh is proved by Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and there are many Islamic Scholars of Hadith who said that the Rakats of Taraweeh is not 8. The Rakats of Taraweeh is 20.
Sa’eeb ibn Yazid said: ‘In the time of Umar ibn Al Khattab (R.A) the people used to observe “20 rakats” (Tarawih) and the witr.’ (Imam Bayhaqi, Volume 004, Page No. 42, Hadith Number 5409)
According to Ummul Mumineen Hazrat ‘Aaisha (R.A)
Narrated by Abu Salma bin `Abdur Rahman that he asked `Aaisha (R.A) “How was the prayer of Allah’s Messenger (Peace Be Upon Him) in Ramadan?” She replied, “He did not pray more than eleven rakat in Ramadan or in any other month. He used to pray four rakat —- let alone their beauty and length—-and then he would pray four —-let alone their beauty and length —- and then he would pray three rak`at (witr).” She added, “I asked, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (Peace Be Upon Him)! Do you sleep before praying the witr?’ He replied, ‘O `Aaisha! My eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep.” (Vol. 3, Book 32, Hadith 230)
If you read the above narration with concentration you’ll see the highlighted word “or in any other month”, while the Tarawih Prayer is only prayed in the Holy month of Ramadan. It means that here the prayer which is discussing here is not Tarawih. Most of Islamic Scholars say that here the prayer which is Tahajjud.
According to Imam Tirmidhi (R.A)
The Majority amongst People of Knowledge, (agree) upon praying 20 Rakahs (of Tarawih) as is narrated from Umar (R.A), Ali (R.A) and other companions of Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him), Abdullah Ibn Mubarak (R.A) and Imam Shafi’i (R.A) said the same, Imam Shafi’i (R.A) said that he saw people of Makkah praying 20 Rakats (Tarawih) [Sunnan Jami’i al Tirimdhi, Volume 3 Page No. 169 Hadith No. 806]
