What does Alhamdulillah Mean?
Alhamdulillah in Arabic (ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ), Pronunciation (Al-hamdo-lil-laah) is an Arabic phrase; let’s divide it into terms according to the Arabic dictionary; Alhamdulillah comprises three terms Alhamd-Li- Allah. Let’s discuss the meanings of each term; the first term, Alhamd or Alhamdu, means to Praise (Glorify or Worship), and the 2nd term, Li, is an Arabic preposition that is the same as to/for in English, combining all the terms we will get Praise to Allah or Praise be to Allah.
Importance of Alhamdulillah:
The Holy Quran started with the word Alhamdulillah; the word Alhamdulillah occurs 38 times in Al Quran; Total 5 Surahs Started with Alhamdulillah, which includes Surah Al Fatihah, Surah Anam, Surah Kahf, Surah As Saba and Surah Al Fatir. Below are some Verses explaining the importance of saying Alhamdulillah.
In the 7th verse of Surah Ibrahim, Allah (S.W.T) Says;
And ˹remember˺ when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more. But if you are ungrateful, surely My punishment is severe.’”
(14:7 Quran)
The above verse persuades us to Thank Allah all the time,
Let’s have a look at another verse, In the 12th verse of Surah Luqman, Allah says;
Indeed, We blessed Luqmân with wisdom, ˹saying˺, “Be grateful to Allah, for whoever is grateful, it is only for their own good. And whoever is ungrateful, then surely Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.”
(31:12 Quran)
From the above verse, one should be informed that Allah is self-sufficient and free from the need for Praise, but we need to praise/worship Him so that He has Mercy on us.
When to Say Alhamdulillah?
Alhamdulillah is a phrase used to Thank Allah (usually when someone feels grateful). Still, as we should always be thankful to Allah, we should say Alhamdulillah whenever possible.
When we see something that we Like and When we see something that we Dislike :
Here is a hadith of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) that teaches us when He used to say Alhamdulillah,
Aisha reported: If the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw something he liked, he would say, “All praise is due to Allah, by whose favor good deeds are accomplished.” If the Prophet saw something he disliked, he would say, “All praise is due to Allah in every circumstance.”

When Someone Sneezes:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, ” If anyone of you sneezes, he should say ‘Al-Hamduli l-lah’ (Praise be to Allah), and his (Muslim) brother or companion should say to him, ‘Yar-hamuka-l-lah’ (May Allah bestow his Mercy on you). When the latter says ‘Yar-hamuka-llah”, the former should say, ‘Yahdikumul-lah wa Yuslih balakum’ (May Allah give you guidance and improve your condition).
